Men's Style Guide

This guide is not about fashion trends or expensive brands. It's about building a functional wardrobe that works for your life, fits well, and helps you feel confident.

The Three Uniforms

1. Casual Everyday

When: Errands, coffee, casual weekends

Core pieces:

  • Well-fitted dark jeans (straight or slim, not skinny)
  • Plain crew neck t-shirt (white, gray, navy)
  • Clean sneakers or casual leather shoes
  • Optional: Lightweight jacket (denim, bomber, or chore coat)

Fit rules:

  • T-shirt hem hits mid-fly
  • Jeans sit at natural waist (no sagging)
  • Sneakers clean, no visible wear

2. Smart Casual

When: Dates, dinners, meeting friends, casual work

Core pieces:

  • Chinos or dark jeans
  • Button-up shirt (Oxford cloth or linen)
  • Leather belt (brown or black, matching shoes)
  • Chelsea boots, loafers, or clean leather sneakers
  • Optional: Blazer or sport coat

Fit rules:

  • Shirt shoulder seam hits your actual shoulder
  • Chinos break slightly at the shoe (no pooling)
  • Blazer sleeves show 1/4–1/2 inch of shirt cuff

3. Date Night / Elevated

When: First dates, special occasions, events

Core pieces:

  • Tailored dark chinos or wool trousers
  • Fitted button-up (white or light blue)
  • Blazer or sport coat
  • Leather dress shoes (oxfords or derbies)
  • Leather belt matching shoe color

Fit rules:

  • Trousers sit at natural waist (belt not required to hold them up)
  • Blazer buttons comfortably without pulling
  • Shoes polished, no scuffs

Fit Rules (Most Important Section)

Shoulders:
Seams should hit the edge of your shoulder, not droop down your arm.

Chest/Torso:
Shirts and jackets should skim your body, not hug or balloon. You should be able to pinch 1–2 inches of fabric at the side.

Sleeve Length:

  • Casual shirts: End at wrist bone
  • Dress shirts under jackets: Show 1/4–1/2 inch of cuff
  • Never cover your hands

Pants Length:

  • Jeans: Slight break at the shoe (fabric touches shoe, slight fold)
  • Chinos/dress pants: No break (hem sits just above shoe) or slight break
  • Never pooling or dragging

Taper:
Pants should taper slightly from knee to ankle. Not tight, just shaped. Avoid excessive stacking at the ankle.

Color Palette Basics

Foundation Colors (80% of wardrobe)

  • Navy — most versatile, works for everything
  • Charcoal gray — pairs with almost anything
  • White — clean, classic, essential
  • Black — formal, sleek (use sparingly for casual)

Accent Color (20% of wardrobe)

Choose ONE to add personality:

  • Olive green
  • Burgundy
  • Tan/camel
  • Light blue

Rule: Build your base in neutrals first. Add one accent color for variety.

Shoes & Accessories

Essential Shoes (Own 3–4 pairs)

  1. White leather sneakers (casual, versatile)
  2. Brown leather boots (Chelsea or chukka — casual to smart casual)
  3. Brown or black leather dress shoes (oxfords or derbies)
  4. Athletic shoes (for gym, not fashion)

Shoe care: Keep them clean. Scuffed, dirty shoes ruin an otherwise good outfit.

Minimal Accessories

  • Watch — simple, classic dial (leather or metal band)
  • Belt — leather, matches shoe color
  • Wallet — slim, leather, not overstuffed

Avoid: Excessive jewelry, logo-heavy accessories, flashy pieces.

Grooming Checklist

Hair

  • Cut every 4–6 weeks (consistent shape matters more than style)
  • Clean, styled (product optional, but use it sparingly)
  • No greasy shine, no visible dandruff

Beard

  • Trimmed and shaped (edges cleaned up)
  • If growing: still groomed, not wild
  • If clean-shaven: no visible stubble for formal settings

Skin

  • Wash face daily (morning and night)
  • Moisturizer (especially if skin looks dry or flaky)
  • Sunscreen (if outdoors regularly)

Nails

  • Trimmed, clean
  • No dirt under nails

Scent

  • Light cologne or none (never overpowering)
  • Deodorant always

Rule: Grooming should be invisible. If someone notices your grooming routine, you've overdone it.

Profile Photo Tips (Dating Apps, LinkedIn, Social)

Lighting

  • Natural light (near a window, outdoors in shade)
  • Avoid harsh overhead lights or direct sun
  • Golden hour (hour before sunset) is ideal

Outfit

  • Smart casual (button-up and jeans or chinos)
  • Solid colors or subtle patterns
  • Avoid logos, graphic tees, or overly casual gym wear

Pose

  • Slight angle (not straight-on)
  • Shoulders back, chin slightly forward (prevents double chin)
  • Relaxed smile (genuine, not forced)
  • Eyes focused on camera

Background

  • Clean, uncluttered
  • Neutral or natural (brick wall, greenery, simple interior)
  • Avoid messy rooms, bathrooms, gym mirrors

What to Avoid

  • Selfies (use a friend, tripod + timer, or professional)
  • Sunglasses (people need to see your eyes)
  • Group photos (hard to identify you)
  • Old photos (use recent images)

Where to Shop (Budget-Conscious Options)

You don't need expensive brands. You need good fit and quality basics.

Affordable, reliable brands:

  • Uniqlo (basics, fit, quality)
  • J.Crew Factory (smart casual staples)
  • Banana Republic (classic, professional)
  • Everlane (minimalist, transparent pricing)
  • Nordstrom Rack (discounted quality brands)

Rule: Spend more on items you'll wear often (shoes, jeans, jacket). Spend less on trendy or occasional pieces.

Final Notes

  • Fit matters more than brand
  • Neutral colors are more versatile than you think
  • Grooming is half the equation
  • Confidence comes from feeling put-together, not from labels
